Switching to the Double Bass: Final Assessment

Congratulations! You’ve made it to the end of this course to help you switch to the double bass!

To test your understanding, there are two culminating projects for to complete.

Project 1: A New Scale

Knowing what you know about the hand and step patterns necessary to create a scale, write down the notes (in the notation program of your choice) and take a video facing you with both your bow and left hand visible of you performing a one octave E-flat Major Scale. As a reminder, all scales only use each letter of the alphabet once and in order. For example, an A Major Scale uses the notes A, B, C#, D, E, F#, G#, and then A back at the top; it doesn’t use Db because that would be skipping the letter C!

Project 2: Playing the Circle

You’re now ready to demonstrate your mastery over the fingerboard! Record one (1) video facing you with both your bow and left hand visible with no edits of you performing the following scales in order. Each scale must be played as quarter notes slurred 2 notes per bow, back to back. If you make a mistake, keep the take saved on your device, and save it for the reflection at the end!

  1. Eb major (1 octave)

  2. Bb major (1 octave)

  3. F major (2 octaves)

  4. C major (1 octave)

  5. G major (2 octaves)

  6. D major (1 octave)

  7. A major (1 octave)

  8. E major (1 octave)

Reflection: what mistakes were present at the beginning of this scale project that were not present by the end? What mistakes were you unable to work out? What practice strategies did you use to help iron out those mistakes (e.g. slowing things down, repetition of shifts with a drone for intonation, etc.)?
